Nokia N9 PR1.2

I updated my Nokia N9 to the PR1.2 a while ago. There are many good improvements, like improved copy-paste and a new default font. The default Facebook application had many improvementsĀ  and is now usable. Update contains also many small, but important improvements, like bigger snooze/stop buttons for alarm clock and feels like battery lasts longer, solid two days. You can now also install Firefox from Nokia Store, been waiting this one for a while. All in all, my favorite phone just got a lot better :)

Gnome3

I’ve been using Gnome3 since I upgraded my computers to Fedora 16 and actually I kinda like it. There are of course setbacks and couple bad design decisions what many people have been raving about but they can be short-circuited with extensions (like the infamousĀ  decision not add Shutdown button to menu as default). And I think it’s quite beautiful desktop, but still I’m also little pissed that they have removed much of the configurability. What Gnome3 needs in my opinion is that it would come with most popular extensions and the Gnome Tweak Tool should be installed as default also (better yet, the configuration options should be added to the integrated system settings). It would help new users, but as power user I can find the extensions I need (though I would rather use my time for something more productive) and tweak it the way I want it. Gnome3 is still in early stages, only 2 versions released, looking forward to see how it evolves.

Nokia N9

So I got Nokia N9 for Christmas and been playing with for a month now. I had few other choices to go with, namely Nokia 701 (Symbian Belle) or some high-end Android phone (I guess Samsung Galaxy S ||). The Nokia 701 was quite cheap and although Symbian get a lot of criticism about its use experience I heard it’s getting better and the Belle version is already quite usable. Also 701 hardware specs look quite good. I mainly hesitated because Nokia has informed the N9 will be the last Meego phone and Meego seems quite dead. So there won’t be a lot third-party programs available through Nokia Store. But anyways I decided to give the N9 a chance and got my first Linux phone and so far haven’t regret it!

The hardware is great and really like the design, feels solid. Would be nice to have HDMI output and USB hostmode, but I can live without them for now. They did quite good with user interface, the swiping really works well. Though as this is my first phone with touchscreen it was bit difficult at first to get used to it, especially writing was horrible at fist but now it goes well. What has surprised me the most is battery life, it last normally 2-3 days. I was prepared to recharge it every night, but no. I guess I don’t use it enough :)

Of course there are some bad things also. First, the Facebook application is missing some features, for example like-button for comments and seems quite sluggish and the default Internet browser leaves a lot to desire. The basic things work well, but lacks some features I would like. Maybe I’ll try Firefox Mobile some point. One other problem I have is that mail client doesn’t work with 3G (or 2G) connections, only with WLAN connection, it’s a IMAP4 mailbox setup as other mail account. Hopefully next update will correct these.

I still haven’t used much all the features, like camera, so there is still stuff to discover, but for now I’m very happy with it. I plan to do some programming with it also when I have time, got couple of small application ideas already, but just for fun :)

Security development

I did a paper to my school about adding security to Scrum software devopment process. It seems to be quite new topic and was sad to see there wasn’tĀ  much information about open source security development, I used Microsoft’s SDL for Agile in my paper. But now things might change as Red Hat is working on security development. Can’t wait see what they come up, hopefully they address also agile software development processes.
