So I got Nokia N9 for Christmas and been playing with for a month now. I had few other choices to go with, namely Nokia 701 (Symbian Belle) or some high-end Android phone (I guess Samsung Galaxy S ||). The Nokia 701 was quite cheap and although Symbian get a lot of criticism about its use experience I heard it’s getting better and the Belle version is already quite usable. Also 701 hardware specs look quite good. I mainly hesitated because Nokia has informed the N9 will be the last Meego phone and Meego seems quite dead. So there won’t be a lot third-party programs available through Nokia Store. But anyways I decided to give the N9 a chance and got my first Linux phone and so far haven’t regret it!
The hardware is great and really like the design, feels solid. Would be nice to have HDMI output and USB hostmode, but I can live without them for now. They did quite good with user interface, the swiping really works well. Though as this is my first phone with touchscreen it was bit difficult at first to get used to it, especially writing was horrible at fist but now it goes well. What has surprised me the most is battery life, it last normally 2-3 days. I was prepared to recharge it every night, but no. I guess I don’t use it enough
Of course there are some bad things also. First, the Facebook application is missing some features, for example like-button for comments and seems quite sluggish and the default Internet browser leaves a lot to desire. The basic things work well, but lacks some features I would like. Maybe I’ll try Firefox Mobile some point. One other problem I have is that mail client doesn’t work with 3G (or 2G) connections, only with WLAN connection, it’s a IMAP4 mailbox setup as other mail account. Hopefully next update will correct these.
I still haven’t used much all the features, like camera, so there is still stuff to discover, but for now I’m very happy with it. I plan to do some programming with it also when I have time, got couple of small application ideas already, but just for fun
